Intro
After two first CD's devoted to the great heroines of Baroque and Classical opera, Véronique Gens and Christophe Rousset will continue their exploration of tragedy in French, focusing on the Romantic period. From Iphigénie en Tauride by Gluck (1779) to Sapho by Gounod (1851), Hérodiade or Marie-Magdeleine (1906) by Massenet, the three volumes of the “Tragic heroins” series will cover three centuries of opera and will thus illustrate the evolution of lyric and musical expression. This new program will be exclusively composed of arias in French, but will also offer pieces that have been reworked or trans- lated by the composers themselves such as Don Carlos of Verdi.
This programme is supported by the Annenberg Foundation / Gregory et Regina Annenberg Weingarten and the Cercle des Mécènes of Les Talens Lyriques. Coproduction Opéra Comique, Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française.
