“From a child’s innocent charm to the blackest of tragedies and from the radiant light of the Viennese countryside to the most melancholy of romantic passions, Schubert was able to create a whole world of contrasts in his symphonies, a world of conflicting moods and clashing emotions. Together with his great posthumously published sonatas, these symphonies explore the most ambitious of programmes. Some listeners may find their development sections too long, but this is to deprive ourselves of the pleasure afforded by the hypnotic spell that is cast upon us when this world of infinity opens up before us. Schubert’s formal mastery was self-evidently absolute, as was the palette of orchestral colours that allowed him to create these unique and fascinating structures. All music lovers rightly cherish Schubert’s songs and impromptus, but as a result they may sometimes unjustly neglect this symphonic universe in which this contemporary of Beethoven repeatedly proved his excellence, albeit in a wholly different way.”
